About half way between Farmington, New Mexico and Cuba, New Mexico is a small town called Lybrook. Just west of Lybrook is a little known vast wilderness area called Lybrook Badlands. There are no trails in this area and it can be quite difficult and precarious climbing down and out of ravines that may be as deep as 500 feet. However if solitude is what you want you'll most likely have it there. Except for the people in our group of 6 we did not see another person the whole day we were there.

You'll see interesting hoodoos carved by erosion, ribbons of multicolored soil, and sunsets as beautiful as they come.

I recommend caution when hiking this little known area. It could be a long time before help could come if you are alone. Also it would be foolish to hike in the ravines during a rain storm. Flash floods could bring disaster quite quickly. But nevertheless enjoy the place. It'll be an experience you'll not soon forget.

Because there are no trails, a GPS or a good sense of direction is very useful.

Here are a few images from my one day journery to this very interesting wilderness.
